Physiological tips for apple growing farmers

1. The Paradigm Shift in Orchard Management Traditionally, apple orchard management followed a two-step framework: growers spent several years establishing a rigid structural skeleton before switching focus to maintenance pruning and yield control. Modern systems—like Solaxe and centrifugal training (part of the LITE concept)—integrate structural management and crop regulation into a single continuous process. Rather than relying heavily on dwarfing rootstocks or aggressive structural pruning to curb vigor, growers actively guide the tree’s energy directly into fruiting laterals from the start.

2. The Natural "Extinction" Phenomenon In natural orchard growth, apple cultivars display varying degrees of "extinction"—the natural, physiological cessation of growth or abortion of certain weak fruiting spurs and axillary buds. Research shows that regular-bearing cultivars naturally drop or abort up to 68% to 98% of unnecessary laterals within their first 2 to 3 years of development. By shedding redundant growth early, the tree prevents internal shading and conserves photosynthate for high-performing fruit sites.

3. Artificial Extinction and Centrifugal Training Artificial extinction mimics nature by manually removing unproductive fruiting laterals (spurs and brindles) at bloom time. Centrifugal training specifically cleans out two main zones: the underside of branches (where fruit quality is naturally low due to poor vascular flow and light) and the inner core around the trunk. Removing these shaded, low-quality sinks transforms the canopy into a porous outer mantle, maximizing sunlight exposure throughout the tree and preventing dense spur overcrowding.

4. Shoot Length and Fruit Autonomy A lateral shoot's length directly dictates its ability to support high-quality fruit. Short spurs ($<1\text{ cm}$) often suffer from poor leaf-to-fruit ratios and undergo biennial bearing. In contrast, medium-length autonomous shoots or "bearing brindles" ($4\text{–}15\text{ cm}$) carry sufficient leaf area to nourish the developing fruit while simultaneously initiating a healthy terminal flower bud for the following season.

5. The "Bourse-Over-Bourse" Phenomenon ($\beta$) The key to avoiding biennial bearing (alternate bearing) lies in the bourse-over-bourse phenomenon ($\beta$). This is a shoot's ability to set a terminal fruit bud on its relay shoot (bourse-shoot) year after year on the exact same complex. Regular-bearing cultivars naturally exhibit higher rates of bourse-over-bourse. Centrifugal training enhances this trait across cultivars by freeing up local nutrients and light, encouraging shoots to fruit continuously without needing a year off to recover.

6. Balancing Crop Load per Branch Cross-Sectional Area Modern precision canopy management measures crop load relative to branch size rather than trunk size. Expressing fruit load as the number of fruiting laterals per square centimeter of Fruiting Branch Cross-Sectional Area (FBCSA) allows growers to optimize crop density. Trials show that spacing 2 to 4 fruiting laterals per $\text{cm}^2$ FBCSA balances annual vegetative growth with yield, preventing stress-induced alternate bearing.

7. Early Pruning on 1-Year-Old Wood (1YW) Because natural selection among buds occurs early in a branch's lifespan, canopy management must be executed early. Thinning out flower clusters on 1-year-old wood (keeping roughly one lateral every $10\text{ cm}$) significantly boosts both terminal fruit size and the length of lateral bourse-shoots. Performing extinction early on young wood establishes fruiting autonomy before the branch becomes overcrowded and spur-bound.

8. Impact on Fruit Size, Color, and Precocious Harvest Centrifugal training drastically improves fruit size distribution and color uniformity. Because shaded inner fruits are eliminated, remaining apples receive optimal light interception. In experimental trials on 'Galaxy' apples, centrifugal training allowed up to 75% of the total yield to be harvested on the very first picking date due to advanced, uniform color development, without sacrificing total harvest weight.

25 Tips for Apple Farmers

  1. Focus on Fruit-Load Training Early: Shift your management strategy from building heavy structural limbs to controlling crop load directly on fruiting laterals from year one.
  2. Adopt Centrifugal Training: Clear out fruiting laterals growing on the underside of branches and close to the main trunk to optimize canopy light.
  3. Practice Early Artificial Extinction: Definitively remove weak spurs and brindles at bloom rather than relying solely on post-bloom fruitlet thinning.
  4. Target 1-Year-Old Wood (1YW): Space out laterals on 1-year-old wood to roughly one every $10\text{ cm}$ to encourage longer, healthier bourse-shoots.
  5. Manage Load by Branch Area (FBCSA): Calculate crop load based on Fruiting Branch Cross-Sectional Area ($\text{cm}^2$ FBCSA) rather than trunk thickness for precise load balancing.
  6. Aim for Medium-Length Shoots: Encourage medium-length shoots ($4\text{–}15\text{ cm}$) as they provide the best balance between leaf area and terminal fruit buds.
  7. Protect the "Bourse-Over-Bourse" Sites: Identify and protect shoots displaying bourse-over-bourse potential to secure annual, non-alternating yield.
  8. Prune Under-Branch Growth: Consistently remove spurs growing straight down; they yield smaller, poorly colored apples due to shading and poor sap flow.
  9. Maintain a Porous Outer Canopy: Keep the canopy center open to allow top-down light penetration to the inner layer of the peripheral fruiting mantle.
  10. Avoid Heavy Heading Cuts: Heavy heading cuts spur vigorous vegetative regrowth; use extinction cuts instead to maintain structural equilibrium.
  11. Thin Clusters Precociously: On heavily loaded clusters, thin down to 1–2 fruits per cluster early to promote return bloom for the following year.
  12. Know Your Cultivar's Growth Type: Tailor pruning to cultivar habits (e.g., Type II spur-types need earlier extinction intervention than Type IV spreading types).
  13. Promote Natural Branch Bending: Allow crop weight to naturally bend fruiting branches below the horizontal to control vegetative vigor naturally.
  14. Use Weights for Upright Cultivars: If growing erect or spur-type cultivars, artificially weigh or tie down branches early to encourage fruiting over shoot growth.
  15. Prevent "Spur-Bound" Conditions: Eliminate overcrowded, weak spur clusters early (years 1–3) to prevent early orchard decline and small fruit size.
  16. Maximize Return Bloom: Ensure proper leaf-to-fruit ratios on individual shoots to support flower bud differentiation for the next season.
  17. Improve Fruit Color Precociously: Use center-tree extinction to increase direct sunlight exposure, allowing a larger percentage of fruit to be picked in the first harvest pass.
  18. Balance Chemical and Manual Thinning: Combine early manual extinction with targeted chemical thinning to minimize labor costs while retaining high fruit quality.
  19. Watch for Latent Bud Awakening: Monitor cultivars like 'Fuji' that tend to push latent buds, requiring occasional touch-up extinction.
  20. Optimize Canopy Discontinuities: Maintain proper spacing between individual tree crowns to avoid inter-tree shading across row lines.
  21. Protect Spur Leaves: Retain healthly spur leaves during early spring, as they supply vital calcium and carbohydrates to young setting fruitlets.
  22. Reduce Canopy Re-Growth: Make clean extinction cuts at the base of small laterals; re-growth rarely occurs on short lateral extinction sites.
  23. Focus on Uniform Fruit Sizing: Aim to eliminate fruit smaller than $75\text{ mm}$ by adjusting overall lateral density rather than just hand-thinning fruitlets late in the season.
  24. Implement LITE Planting Systems: Consider integrated Light in the Tree with Extinction (LITE) orchard designs when establishing new blocks.
  25. Evaluate Branch History: Regularly inspect 2- to 3-year-old wood segments; if return bloom is failing, reduce local lateral density to restore shoot autonomy.

(Tree Architecture & Fruiting Mechanics)

(Paradigm Shift)

(Natural Extinction)

(Artificial Extinction & Centrifugal Training)

(Shoot Length & Fruit Autonomy)

(Bourse-Over-Bourse Phenomenon)

(Crop Load per FBCSA)

(Early Pruning on 1YW)
