1. Vegetable Grafting: A Climate-Smart Technology Transforming Modern Vegetable Production

Vegetable production throughout the world is becoming increasingly difficult due to climate change, continuous monocropping, declining soil health, and the rapid spread of soil-borne diseases. Farmers growing tomato, brinjal, chilli, cucumber, watermelon, melon, and other high-value vegetables often suffer heavy economic losses from bacterial wilt, Fusarium wilt, Phytophthora root rot, root-knot nematodes, flooding, salinity, drought, and extreme temperatures. Chemical pesticides and soil fumigants provide only temporary relief, are expensive, and often fail because many pathogens survive deep within the soil for years. As environmentally friendly alternatives become increasingly important, vegetable grafting has emerged as one of the most effective and sustainable technologies for improving crop productivity. Instead of relying solely on pesticides, grafting combines a high-yielding commercial variety (scion) with a disease-resistant and vigorous root system (rootstock), allowing farmers to harvest healthier crops even under stressful field conditions. Today, grafting is widely practiced in Japan, Korea, China, Europe, and many tropical countries and is rapidly expanding to other parts of the world because of its proven ability to increase crop resilience and profitability.

Vegetable Grafting How Does It Work?

Vegetable grafting is the process of joining two compatible plants so that they grow as a single plant. The upper portion, known as the scion, determines fruit characteristics such as yield, shape, color, taste, and market preference, while the lower portion, known as the rootstock, provides a vigorous root system that absorbs water and nutrients efficiently and protects the plant from soil-borne diseases and environmental stresses. After grafting, the vascular tissues of the scion and rootstock reconnect, allowing water, nutrients, minerals, hormones, and other biochemical signals to move freely throughout the plant. Once healing is complete, the grafted seedling functions like a naturally developed plant but possesses the combined advantages of both parents. This biological partnership enables farmers to grow susceptible but high-yielding vegetable varieties in fields where production would otherwise be impossible because of persistent soil diseases or unfavorable environmental conditions.

fig4- use sharp knife to remove phloem part from scion

For successful grafting, compatibility between the scion and rootstock is essential. Even disease-resistant rootstocks cannot perform well if they are physiologically incompatible with the chosen scion. Therefore, selecting compatible plant materials is the first step toward successful grafted vegetable production. Studies have shown that graft compatibility above 90% can be achieved when appropriate rootstocks are selected and proper grafting techniques are followed.

3. How Grafting Strengthens Plant Physiology beyond Disease Resistance

Many farmers believe that grafting only protects plants from diseases, but its physiological benefits are much broader. Vigorous rootstocks develop larger and healthier root systems capable of absorbing greater quantities of water and mineral nutrients from deeper soil layers. These roots also produce higher levels of natural plant hormones such as Cytokinins and gibberellins, which stimulate cell division, maintain leaf greenness, improve flowering, reduce premature aging, and support continuous fruit development. Consequently, grafted vegetables usually exhibit stronger vegetative growth, better nutrient-use efficiency, higher tolerance to drought, flooding, salinity, and temperature extremes, and longer harvesting periods compared with non-grafted crops. This improved physiological efficiency explains why grafted vegetables often outperform ordinary plants even when disease pressure is relatively low.

fig5- Take and judge same sized scion and stock.. so that their cambium layer may match well.

Another important advantage is that vigorous root systems continue functioning under stressful environmental conditions where ordinary roots fail. During flooding, drought, or saline conditions, grafted plants maintain better water balance, improved photosynthesis, and more stable growth because the resistant rootstock protects the plant from root damage. As climate change increases the frequency of extreme weather events, these physiological advantages make grafting one of the most practical climate-resilient technologies available for commercial vegetable production.

4. Disease Management: Why Grafting Often Performs Better Than Chemicals

Soil-borne pathogens are among the most destructive enemies of vegetable production because they remain hidden in the soil for many years and infect plants through their roots. Diseases such as bacterial wilt (Ralstonia solanacearum), Fusarium wilt, Verticillium wilt, Phytophthora blight, and root-knot nematodes can destroy entire fields, especially under warm and humid conditions. Unfortunately, chemical pesticides often fail to provide satisfactory control because these pathogens survive deep within the soil or inside the plant's vascular system. Continuous use of chemicals also increases production costs, environmental pollution, and the risk of pesticide resistance. For these reasons, grafting onto disease-resistant rootstocks has become one of the most reliable integrated disease management strategies worldwide.

fig 6- sharpen the portion to be inserted into rootstock.

Research on grafted tomato has shown that resistant eggplant rootstocks can dramatically reduce bacterial wilt incidence, improve plant survival, and increase marketable yield without reducing fruit quality. However, grafting should not be viewed as a complete replacement for good agricultural practices. Proper sanitation, crop rotation where possible, balanced fertilization, quality irrigation water, and effective insect management remain essential for achieving maximum benefits from grafting technology.

5. Choosing the Right Rootstock: The Foundation of Successful Vegetable Grafting

The success of vegetable grafting depends more on selecting the appropriate rootstock than on the grafting operation itself. Different rootstocks possess different strengths. Some provide excellent resistance to bacterial wilt, while others tolerate flooding, salinity, drought, root-knot nematodes, or Phytophthora root rot. Therefore, farmers should never select rootstocks simply because they are easily available or inexpensive. Instead, rootstock selection should always be based on the major production constraints of the field, local climate, soil conditions, and compatibility with the chosen scion variety. Using an unsuitable rootstock may result in poor graft compatibility, weak growth, reduced yield, or failure to control the target disease, making the entire grafting effort ineffective.

fig-7 cut or make a wound by sharp knife from top to downwards upto the size of scion sharpen

Another critical consideration is the quality and age of seedlings used for grafting. Successful grafting requires healthy seedlings with nearly identical stem diameters, usually when the third true leaf has emerged. In many crops, rootstock seeds should be sown several days earlier than scion seeds so that both seedlings reach the correct stem diameter simultaneously. Attempting to graft seedlings that differ greatly in age or thickness often leads to poor vascular connection, delayed healing, weak plants, and low survival. Therefore, careful nursery planning is one of the most overlooked yet most important factors determining the success of commercial vegetable grafting.

6. Field Management after Transplanting: Small Mistakes Can Destroy the Benefits of Grafting

The success of vegetable grafting does not end once the grafted seedlings are transplanted into the field. In fact, the first few weeks after transplanting determine whether the grafted plant will fully express its potential or gradually lose the advantages gained through grafting. Although grafted vegetables are generally managed like non-grafted crops, several critical practices are unique to grafted plants. Farmers should always transplant grafted seedlings on raised beds, particularly during the rainy season or in poorly drained soils, because prolonged waterlogging deprives roots of oxygen and encourages the development of soil-borne pathogens. Even when disease-resistant rootstocks are used, continuous flooding can reduce root activity, delay plant growth, and lower yield. Research has consistently shown that combining grafted plants with raised beds and rain shelters significantly improves off-season vegetable production, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions.

fig8- Insert properly the scion onto rootstock so that cambium layer match each orther

One of the most common and costly mistakes farmers make is planting grafted seedlings too deeply. The graft union—the point where the scion and rootstock are joined—must always remain 5–8 cm above the soil surface. If this union becomes buried, the scion often produces adventitious roots that penetrate the soil. Once these roots become established, the scion bypasses the disease-resistant rootstock and begins absorbing water and nutrients through its own susceptible root system. As a result, bacterial wilt, Fusarium wilt, Phytophthora root rot, nematodes, and other soil-borne pathogens can infect the plant despite grafting. Many farmers mistakenly blame the rootstock for grafting failure, while the actual cause is improper transplanting depth. Maintaining the graft union above the soil throughout the crop cycle is therefore one of the most important rules of successful grafted vegetable production.

7. Common Farmer Mistakes That Greatly Reduce Grafting Success

Many farmers believe that grafting itself guarantees higher yield, but in reality, the benefits depend entirely on proper management. One frequent mistake is selecting rootstocks based solely on availability rather than disease resistance or environmental adaptation. A rootstock that performs well against bacterial wilt may not tolerate Phytophthora or flooding, while another may be excellent under saline conditions but less suitable for drought. Therefore, rootstock selection should always be based on the major soil problems of the production area rather than market availability alone. Similarly, grafting seedlings with different stem diameters or different physiological ages often results in poor cambial contact, weak vascular connection, delayed healing, and ultimately lower survival rates.

Fig-Use thin grafting plastic so that there will be good combination of scion and stock

Another serious mistake is neglecting the healing and acclimatization process. Immediately after grafting, the newly joined seedlings are unable to transport sufficient water because the vascular tissues have not yet reconnected. If exposed to direct sunlight, strong wind, or low humidity during this period, the scion loses water rapidly, wilts, and eventually dies. Maintaining high relative humidity (above 85%), moderate temperatures (25–32°C), and low light intensity for several days allows the graft union to heal successfully. Likewise, farmers should never move grafted seedlings directly from the healing chamber into the open field. Gradual hardening through controlled ventilation and increasing sunlight exposure enables seedlings to adapt to field conditions without physiological shock.

8. Physiological Facts about Grafted Vegetables That Many Farmers and Technicians Overlook

The primary benefit of grafting is not simply disease resistance—it is the creation of a more efficient root system. Vigorous rootstocks absorb larger quantities of water and mineral nutrients, allowing the scion to maintain continuous growth even under stressful environmental conditions. They also synthesize greater amounts of naturally occurring plant hormones such as cytokinins and gibberellins, which stimulate shoot development, delay leaf senescence, enhance flowering, and prolong fruit production. As a result, grafted vegetables frequently remain productive for a longer period than non-grafted plants, particularly under protected cultivation or during off-season production. This physiological advantage explains why grafted crops often show greater resilience rather than merely surviving diseases.

Another little-known fact is

Fig10- Finally keep such grafted plants in 85-95% humidity for 15-20 days than secondary nursery

that grafting is not a substitute for good crop management. Disease-resistant rootstocks cannot compensate for poor drainage, excessive fertilizer application, severe nutrient imbalance, or continuous monocropping without sanitation. Excessive nitrogen fertilization, especially under poorly drained conditions, encourages succulent growth that may increase susceptibility to several diseases and reduce fruit quality. Likewise, grafting cannot overcome severe viral diseases transmitted by insects such as whiteflies or thrips because these pathogens infect the scion directly. Farmers should therefore view grafting as one component of an integrated production system that also includes healthy seedlings, balanced fertilization, proper irrigation, crop rotation where possible, insect management, and good field hygiene.

9. Farmer's Golden Rules: What Every Grower Must Do—and Must Never Do—When Using Grafted Seedlings

Successful vegetable grafting depends as much on management as on the graft itself. Farmers should always choose disease-resistant rootstocks suitable for local soil conditions, use healthy seedlings of similar stem diameter, maintain strict sanitation during grafting, heal grafted plants under high humidity and low light, transplant on raised beds, keep the graft union above the soil, remove rootstock suckers and scion adventitious roots whenever they appear, provide staking for vigorous plants, and regularly monitor the crop for insects and diseases. These simple practices preserve the advantages of grafting and ensure higher survival, improved yield, and longer harvesting periods.

Equally important are the practices farmers must never do. Never bury the graft union beneath the soil, never allow scion roots to reach the ground, never use incompatible or disease-susceptible rootstocks, never expose freshly grafted seedlings to direct sunlight before healing is complete, never over-irrigate poorly drained fields, never ignore rootstock suckers, and never assume grafting alone can replace good agricultural practices. Farmers who avoid these mistakes generally obtain healthier plants, greater tolerance to bacterial wilt, flooding, and other soil-related stresses, and more stable production under increasingly unpredictable climatic conditions. When combined with proper crop management, vegetable grafting becomes one of the most reliable technologies for sustainable, high-value vegetable production.

(Must Not Do)
